HoarsenessA variety of conditions cause disorders of the voice. Abuse or misuse of the voice can cause nodules or bumps on the vocal cords. Other conditions that can cause changes to occur in the vocal cords are acid reflux, smoking, thyroid disorders and cancer. An important thing to note is that 40% of patients who are having reflux do not have symptoms of heartburn or indigestion. Reflux is easily treated with medications. A thorough head and neck examination, including a Flexible Fiberoptic Laryngoscopy, is the initial step in evaluating voice disorders.
