Snoring and Sleep Disorders
Snoring is a condition that affects 45% of normal adults and can be a signal that something is seriously wrong with one's breathing during sleep. Men and post-menopausal women are most likely to snore.
Sleep apnea comes from the Greek work "apnea" meaning without breath. People with sleep apnea have frequent episodes of totally obstructed breathing. Sleep apnea is a potentially life-threatening condition and is diagnosed by a sleep study, along with a physical examination.
Causes of these conditions include poor muscle tone in the tongue and throat, excessive bulkiness of throat tissue (enlarged tonsils), obstructed nasal airways (large adenoids), deformities in the nose or septum (the wall that separates the nostrils), alcohol and sleeping pills. Treatment includes non-surgical procedures such as nasal allergy or infection management, oral appliances, weight loss and CPAP (nasal mask). Surgical procedures include correction of nasal deformity, removal of tonsils and adenoids, throat and palate surgery and coblation (in-office procedure).
