External Otitis
External otitis is an infection within the outer ear canal. It can be caused by improper use of Q-tips, improper ear cleaning (hairpins, fingernails), swimming and other ear diseases or trauma.
You may have one or more of the following symptoms: ear pain, sensation of fullness, swelling of the ear canal, itching, drainage, hearing loss or ringing in the ear.
Treatment options include cleaning of the ear canal, placement of a wick or sponge, ear drops, vinegar/alcohol solution, cream or ointment, antibiotics and pain medication.
Preventing external otitis can be accomplished by keeping your ears as dry as possible and refrain from putting objects in your ears (including Q-tips, paperclips, hairpins, pencils).
