Hearing Loss
Hearing loss occurs due to a condition affecting one or more of the three main areas of the ear (the outer ear, middle ear or inner ear). Nearly 30 million Americans have impaired hearing. The most common cause of hearing loss in children is otitis media . Heredity, drugs, excessive noise and toxins are the most frequent contributing factors for adults. Although rarely, hearing loss can be caused by damage to the auditory nerve that sends auditory information to the brain.
Hearing loss is a medical disorder. Sometimes, it can be treated surgically. Medical devices , such as hearing aids, and rehabilitation can reduce hearing loss in the vast majority of patients who cannot be helped by surgery.
