Otitis MediaOtitis media is an infection of the middle ear. It is caused by abnormal functioning of the Eustachian tube (the tube which leads from the ear to the back of the throat and equalizes pressure). Abnormal functioning of this tube can be caused by allergies, enlarged or infected adenoids, abnormalities of the palate or nose, cold or upper respiratory infections and trauma caused by flying or scuba diving. Symptoms include pressure in ears, ear pain, hearing loss, fever, loss of appetite, irritability and vomiting. Children may pull or rub ears as a reaction to discomfort or pain. Treatment is directed at reducing swelling and restoring ventilation to the middle ear and can include antihistamines/decongestants, antibiotics, nasal sprays, steroids, allergy management and if fluid in the middle ear persists, placement of ventilating tubes.
