Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR)

Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR) refers to the backflow of stomach acid into the throat or laryngopharynx. LPR is a chronic, intermittent disease and more common than GERD. It is usually not associated with heartburn and treatment usually lasts 6 months or more.

Symptoms of LPR include hoarseness, chronic cough, difficulty swallowing, chronic sore throat, throat clearing and difficulty swallowing.

Treatment includes lifestyle changes and Proton Pump Inhibitors (pills, tablets, capsules). Over the counter medications can also be included in treatment.
