Bell's Palsy

Bell's palsy is the common name for facial nerve paralysis that occurs on one side of the face. Usually, the facial paralysis resolves within eight weeks. Possible causes are a viral infection, ear infection, trauma or a tumor.

Symptoms of Bell's palsy include facial weakness, facial pain, altered sensitivity to sound or taste and a dry or irritated eye.

If treatment is needed, pain and cortisone medications can be used as well as massage, eye care and in extreme cases, surgery to prevent the nerve from dying.
